Contact properties and timeline events

The three contact properties and three timeline events Transactional Email adds to HubSpot, and how to use them.

Transactional Email writes a small amount of data back to the recipient’s HubSpot contact, so your team can see what was sent without leaving the record. The contact timeline shows only what reached the recipient or bounced back. Everything else — failed sends, deliveries, suppressed attempts — lives in the app’s Send log.

The app creates these when you install it, in a property group called Transactional Email.

Label Internal name What it holds
Transactional email suppressed te_suppressed Yes/no. Yes when the address hard-bounces, soft-bounces 3 times in a row, or marks an email as spam. Set back to No when a Super Admin clears the suppression, or by the next successful send to the contact’s primary email address.
Transactional email suppression reason te_suppression_reason Why the address is suppressed: Hard bounce, Spam complaint, or Repeated soft bounces. Cleared with the property above.
Last transactional email sent te_last_sent The date of the most recent email to the contact that was accepted for delivery.

Use the label in reports and lists and the internal name in the API.

Each event appears on the recipient contact’s activity timeline.

Event When Shows
Transactional Email Sent An email is accepted for delivery The template name and send date, plus the sender profile, subject, and message ID
Transactional Email Bounced An email hard- or soft-bounces The template name and bounce type, plus the sender profile, subject, and message ID
Transactional Email Complaint The recipient marks an email as spam The template name, plus the sender profile, subject, and message ID

Not on the timeline: deliveries, suppressed sends, and sends that failed for any other reason. Look those up in the Send log. See Searching the send log.

  • Alert the account owner about a bad address. Build a contact workflow that enrolls contacts when Transactional email suppressed is Yes, and create a task for the contact owner to confirm the email address.
  • Report on recent receipts. Filter a contact list or report on Last transactional email sent in the last 30 days.
  • Find a specific email. Copy the message ID from a timeline event and search for it in App Home’s Send log.

Can I delete these properties? Leave them in place while the app is installed: Transactional Email updates them after sends, bounces, and complaints, and your workflows and reports may rely on them.

Do the timeline events show the email’s content? No — only the template name, subject, sender profile, and message ID. Transactional Email never stores the personalized emails it sends.
